Morris, The Sociology of W.E.B. Du Bois as a Weapon of Racial Equality: Pioneering Scientific Social Research at Historically Black Colleges and Universities
	pdf 173.1 KB ABSTRACT ↗ W.E.B. Du Bois was a pivotal scholar of the 20th century who had a sustained global impact on sociological, literary, and political knowledge. Although he produced groundbreaking sociological scholarship in a historically black school – Atlanta University, his work was marginalized and erased due to racism and the radicalness of his scholarship. This article demonstrates that Du Bois was a founder of scientific sociology in the United States who developed a pioneering and distinct Atlanta School of sociology. This article advances two theses: Du Bois developed an emancipatory school of sociology that theorized and empirically documented the causes of racial and social inequality and that the Atlanta School gave rise to pioneering scientific social research at historically Black colleges and universities that served as intellectual weapons in the struggle for racial equality. Allen - Devost - Mack, Hidden in Plain Sight: Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America
	pdf 233 KB ABSTRACT ↗ Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois held different visions for Black Higher Education. Should college prepare “Talented Tenth” leaders to advocate for full Black equality or teach vocational skills for separate economic development? Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) play significant roles in American culture and society. HBCUs exert outsized influence producing notable Black scholars, political leaders, professionals, and media stars. However, Anti- Black Racism and White Supremacist attitudes minimize or dismiss these important contributions. We critically examine HBCUs in the US higher education landscape from 1976 to 2015 to overview Black college student attendance and graduation patterns. In 2018, HBCUs (3 percent of US universities) awarded 13 percent of BA degrees, 6 percent of MAs and 11 percent of doctorates earned by African Americans. The percent of total degrees HBCUs awarded Black students declined from 1977: 35 percent BAs, 21 percent MAs and 11 percent Doctorates. Emerging from the fiery furnace of American Slavery, Jim Crow Racism and Racial Oppression, HBCUs provided higher education opportunities to lift the Black community and advance American society. HBCUs are a national treasure that must be preserved and strengthened by dismantling systemic inequities in attitudes, funding, resources, and legislation. Johnson, Pioneering the Social Sciences at the Periphery
	pdf 233.7 KB ABSTRACT ↗ This paper focuses on Howard University and a distinguished group of its scholars who, in the 1930s through 1950s across various fields of social science, broke away both from the mainstream U.S. disciplinary approaches of the time and from the institutional limitations of black universities to engage in transformative scholarship and intellectual theorizing on race and empire in the United States and around the world. This paper roots the intellectual history of “the Howard School” in the institutional architecture they forged at Howard at the time. I argue that, as part of a larger effort to confront the coloniality of knowledge and forge an academic and activist decolonial agenda, the Howard scholars established institutions and academic spaces of knowledge production that were unique in the American academy in their organization, mission, vision and methods of research, and played a vital role in sustaining critiques and alternatives to mainstream thinking on race. Schwartz, The Great Migration in Myth and Reality
	pdf 351.7 KB ABSTRACT ↗ The founders of professional sociology in the United States constructed a system of racial segregation that paralleled the Jim Crow system in the American South. Recent research has analyzed both the structure and dynamics of this systemic racism, as well as the resourceful resistance to this discrimination by African-American scholars housed in historically Black universities and colleges (HBCUs). This essay extends that work by discussing the ways in which the Jim Crow structure was enacted and sustained over many decades, how this exclusionary project limited and distorted the research, analysis, and theory developed within the white universities; and how the work of Black sociologists – ignored and dismissed by the white establishment – constitutes a precious heritage of important and still valuable scholarship. This contrast between sterile white establishment scholarship and the still-valuable work of HSBCs scholars is documented by comparing the white and Black scholarship on the first decades of the Great Migration. This comparison demonstrates that even iconic texts by white establishment scholars presented an already disconfirmed portrait of the migration process and dynamics of Black migration from the U.S. rural South to Northern cities; and that distorted portrait of immigration was perpetuated through decades of subsequent establishment scholarship. In contrast the work of Black scholars provided indelible on-the-ground evidence that disproved the theories articulated and perpetuated by their white contemporaries, while documenting a broad theoretical perspective that remains valuable in understanding contemporary migration issues. Vignati, La sociologia secondo Indro Montanelli
	pdf 239.9 KB ABSTRACT ↗ The article is an analysis of the writings of Indro Montanelli about sociology. Montanelli, probably the best known Italian journalist of the XXth Century, was, admittedly, an opponent of sociology, which he considered a pseudo-science, able only to repeat self-evident truths in an unnecessarily complicated language. Montanelli’s opposition to sociology is frequently expressed in an ironic form (and Francesco Alberoni is the main target of these ironies), but sometimes it gives rise to more complex and original analysis, as when in some post-war articles, he highlights what, in his opinion, is a link between the spread of polls and the dangers of disguised forms of totalitarianism. At the origin of Montanellian opposition to sociology lies the adherence to a pessimistic view of man and the rejection of what Wrong called the «oversocialized conception of man». From the re-reading of Montanelli’s articles on the subject, however, the appreciation for some classics of sociology such as Weber, Sombart and Pareto emerges. Some of his texts also lead to the hypothesis that his approach to reality tended, in an intuitive way, beyond any disciplinary rigor, towards a different idea of sociology, based on the ability to observe everyday life, and on the interpretation of social reality as a form of theatrical representation. The article therefore intends to capture in Montanelli’s texts on sociology a more nuanced and articulated position than the pure and simple refusal of the discipline. The analysis proposed by the article, illuminating some little-known aspects of one of the most followed opinion-leaders of Italian journalism, provides a significant contribution to understanding the difficult process of institutionalization of sociology in Italy. Baldissera, Nicola Abbagnano, un padre fondatore della sociologia italiana nel secondo dopoguerra
	pdf 97.5 KB ABSTRACT ↗ Nicola Abbagnano (1901-1990) was the greatest Italian historian of philosophy in twentieth century and one of the greatest in Europe and the West. In his memory Rosanna Panelli Marvulli dedicated an extensive biography. With Franco Ferrarotti, Abbagnano founded “Quaderni di Sociologia”, this journal, in 1951. Both had intense contacts with American philosophical and sociological culture. The aim was to claim the legitimacy of sociology as a social science; reject the criticisms of Benedetto Croce and the Marxists; outline a “rigorously individualistic conception of social life”; reject any determinism, therefore positivist and Marxist theories. It was not by chance that the initiative was heavily criticized by philosophers with a spiritualistic background. Although not a sociologist, Abbagnano was not only, more than others, a great supporter of Italian sociology after the Second World War. It has also guided its development. 	pdf 123.9 KB ABSTRACT ↗ Starting from the events that led to the 2007 financial crisis, interest in the contribution of social sciences to debt analysis has grown steadily. The book The Sociology of Debt edited by Mark Featherstone aims to provide the reader with the map of the most recent perspectives and issues on this topic, focusing in particular on the social embeddedness of debt and its effect in the debtor-creditor relationship, both at the micro-level (individuals and families) and the macro-level (between states). However, this critical note argues that the authors’ goal is only partially achieved. In fact, the text provides interesting theoretical and analytical considerations, but: i) part of the available scientific literature on the social role and implications of debt is ignored; ii) the empirical analysis of the phenomenon is poorly developed: iii) the appreciable aspiration to multidisciplinarity leads to neglect the extensive knowledge already existing on debt from a sociological perspective. The difficulties of defining its essence and circumscribing its range of applications have determined a contradictory destiny among political scientists, sociologists, philosophers and historians with sudden bursts of popularity and long periods of abandonment, interspersed with critical reinterpretations leaning towards scepticism. The electoral successes of populist parties and leaders in many countries since the late 1990s has revived the academic debate and fuelled a large amount of studies and research. This focus aims to detect and discuss some interesting contributions to the understanding of the features and causes of this phenomenon, that arise from the recent literature on the topic. Parra Saiani, Towards a new canon? Rewriting the history (and the future) of sociology
	pdf 263.5 KB ABSTRACT ↗ In the U.S., over the three past decades, there has been a huge interest in W.E.B. Du Bois and in Black scholars; only recently we are witnessing the proliferation of works on their role as founders of U.S. sociology. While there are differences between them, they all converge in seeing W.E.B. Du Bois as a pioneer of scientific sociology in the United States and a pioneer of public sociology, combining sociology and activism, relevant for contemporary political struggles including the contemporary Black Lives Matter movement. Indeed, alongside the scientific debate regarding the history of U.S. sociology, there is a parallel discourse about the objectivity of the social sciences, and both are increasingly attracting attention and controversy. In this note the Author will focus on the role of Du Bois in founding the discipline in the United States, the relevance of the Atlanta Sociological Laboratory, the debate on objectivity and neutrality as a pre-condition for science, and the call for a “Du Boisian sociology”.
